Liz walked quietly, sneaking up behind Will. She put her hand to his eyes covering them and waited for his reaction. He instantly pulled her hands away and swung around, grabbing her waist and hugging her tight.
âSurprise!â she said, almost laughing.
âYou werenât supposed to be back until tomorrow!â He laughed and hugged her tighter.
âThat was just a decoy. Anna helped me set it up.â He laughed again and leaned his head into her hair taking her in. âItâs nice to see you too,â she laughed.
âYour knee is 100% fine? You wonât have a problem tonight?â he asked, concern in his voice.
She lifted her leg and bent her knee. âGood as new.â She looked around and sighed. âI missed this place.â
âThis place missed you.â
âLiz!â Charlotte came from behind and squealed her name. âYouâre back!â
âYep.â She beamed
âYouâre early! Your welcome back party isnât until tomorrow.â
Will put his hand to his neck and moved it, motioning for Charlotte to shut up.
Liz stared at him. âI guess itâs a good thing I came back early then.â
âIt was supposed to be a surprise,â he said, glaring at Charlotte.
Liz tied her apron around her waist and logged into the system. âWhat section do I have?â
âYouâre shadowing me,â Will said with a straight face.
Liz laughed. âNo, really.â
âIâm serious. Youâre not leaving my side tonight.â
âIâll make you a deal. If you let me work my own section, Iâll let you eat dinner with me while I count my tips.â
âOh, Iâm doing that anyway. Iâm going to need something better than that.â
Liz rolled her eyes. âYouâre not giving me special treatment are you?â
Mary squeezed past them clocking in. âOh joy. Youâre back,â she said sarcastically.
Liz bored her eyes into Will before turning to Mary. âItâs nice to see you too Mary. I heard I missed a lot of stuff. Congratulations to you and Collins.â
Mary rolled her eyes and pushed past again. âThatâs over.â
âThat was fast.â Liz said under her breath. Will tried to hold in a laugh.
âSeriously, what section?â she asked Will again.
âOne.â
âThank you,â she said, extending the u sound for emphasis, and walked past him to start her routine. She felt like she was home. Boy was she glad to be back! The evening went quickly but her stamina was gone. She was happy to rest at the bar and count her tips just like she always did and was thankful Collins hadnât changed his habits either. He was in the cellar taking inventory and restocking the bar, leaving her in blissful solitude.
Will sat next to her and placed a dozen red roses in between them. She narrowed her eyes. âWhat are these?â She looked at them like they were a poisonous snake ready to snap at her.
âSince you are so stubborn and wouldnât give me your address, I had to wait until now to give you your get well soon flowers.â
âYouâre doing it again.â
âWhat?â He asked innocently.
âSingling me out. We are supposed to be friends. Friends donât give each other flowers.â
âYes they do. Especially when theyâre sick!â
âOkay, maybe they do.
